Cervical Radiculopathy (Pinched Nerve in the Neck)

A squeezed nerve in the neck that can cause pain and other problems traveling down the arm.

Drawing of the spine with a close-up of a herniated disk pressing on a nerve, labeled pinched nerve and sciatic nerve.

What is it?

A pinched nerve in your neck happens when a nerve gets squeezed or bothered as it leaves your spinal cord. This can happen because of a slipped disk, wear and tear in your spine, or an injury. This condition is most common in people between ages 40 and 55.

Let’s talk about it

Imagine a nerve in your neck is a garden hose, and something is squeezing it so no water can get through. This is similar to what happens with a pinched nerve. That pressure can cause pain and other problems that travel down your arm.

Treatment options

The goal of treatment is to take pressure off the nerve, lower swelling, and help you move normally again. This is done with special exercises and hands-on therapy from a physical therapist. You will also learn how to do these exercises the right way at home.
